Season of Savings: Ways to save money at the grocery store

The first step in cooking the perfect Christmas dinner is buying all of those groceries. So, WINK News wants to make sure you know what to do before and after your grocery trip.

Digital Coupons and receipt scanning apps make it easier than ever to save money.

But before you use those, be sure to use the credit card best suited for a supermarket purchase. Kimberly Palmer with NerdWallet says some cards have a higher return than others.

“Some credit cards, American Express Blue Cash Preferred, for example, gives you 6% back on your groceries up to a certain amount,” Palmer said.

Next, Palmer said to download the store’s app. That’s one of the easiest ways to navigate store savings that interest you.

The Publix app centralizes BOGO deals and digital coupons. The Target Circle app is free and gives you 1% back for a future Target purchase.

For your receipt scanning, consider using cashback or rebate apps like Ibotta, Fetch or Receipt Hog.

“You download the app and you can actually scan your grocery receipts upload them and it collects cashback that you’re eligible for,” Palmer said.

While curbside pickup might be considered a safety feature now, it is also a budgeting tool. You’ll know your total before you check out and you are less likely to impulse buy.
