Android 11 brings a host of upgrades to virtually any supporting device, but there are a few extra perks if you own a Pixel phone. Google has detailed a host of “Pixel-first” features that will reach its phones before anyone else’s.
Your phone can make more recommendations, for a start. Android on the Pixel will make app suggestions based on your daily routines, theoretically making it easier to plan your morning commute or relax at the end of the day. If you use Gboard in English, you’ll also receive Smart Reply suggestions in chat apps to speed up common responses. Your Pixel will also borrow a cue from iOS with suggestions for folder names based on the apps inside — group your home workout apps together and you may get a “Fitness” label.
Other updates may be less conspicuous, but still helpful. There are now easier ways to copy, paste, save, and share content, whether it’s text or a screenshot. You might have less hassles finding friends who’ve shared their location, for that matter. It’s now possible to use Google Maps’ Live View with location sharing, giving you a better visual point of reference. You’ll get augmented reality directions to point you the right way in this mode.
Android 11 is reaching Pixel devices as of today, so you won’t have to wait to try the new additions.
Google didn’t say when any of these features might reach third-party Android 11 phones. It could be weeks or months before you see these additions elsewhere. Even so, it’s evident that Android 11 will evolve over time if you have a non-Pixel handset.
