Google Creative Lab has launched an augmented reality app that lets you draw anywhere you wish. It’s called Just A Line, and thanks to the power of AR technology, a little artistic creativity, and Google’s ARCore which was just expanded upon earlier this week, Just A Line lets you utilize the phone’s camera viewfinder to see what’s in front of you like you were taking a picture and draw on top of that image, which you can then save to your phone’s gallery and then show it off to friends and family or you can even share it across social media if you prefer.
Using this app won’t actually let you create images, rather it creates short video clips. Once you open the app it’ll attempt to find something to focus on so you start drawing, and then before you begin you can hit the record button so it will record you drawing each step until the timer either runs out or you hit the stop button to finish. It’s at this stage where you can save the video or share it.
This is an experimental app and much like some of the other projects coming out of Google Creative Lab, Just A Line feels like a fun concept rather than an application or tool that you will use on a day-to-day basis. That doesn’t mean it won’t be fun to use and that you won’t get any use out of it at all. This is one of the applications that Google released as part of the ARCore expansion, which means you will need to have a phone that’s compatible with ARCore to make use of the app, and that leaves things a little more limiting as there aren’t that many that can actually take advantage of the ARCore technology just yet.
