Can you believe it? Gmail launched 15 years ago today.
In honor of the milestone, the internet giant is offering a new suite of smart tools, sending emailing into the future – literally.
Now, you can create scheduled messages and enjoy suggested subject lines.
Scheduled messages allow you to create an email draft to be sent at a specified time in the future. In other words, you can decide when your email gets delivered to someone else’s inbox.
The feature could come in handy when chatting across time zones or communicating with colleagues who have left work for the day.
“We understand that work can often carry over to non-business hours, but it’s important to be considerate of everyone’s downtime,” Jacob Bank, director of Product Management, G Suite, writes in today’s announcement. “We want to make it easier to respect everyone’s digital well-being.”
To take advantage of the feature, once you’re done typing your email, click the three dots on the right side of compose and select “Schedule Send” from the dropdown menu. Date and time options will appear to choose from.
Gmail’s Smart Compose is also getting a facelift.
The assistive email feature that Google unveiled in May 2018 will now make “smarter” personalized suggestions for you. So, if you prefer using slang in your greetings, it can suggest just that. It can also suggest a subject line based on the email you’ve typed out.
Google said that Smart Compose saved people from typing over “1 billion characters each week” since it was introduced.
Smart Compose also includes support for more languages, including Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese. Support is coming to all Android devices as it was previously only available on the Pixel 3.
It’s unclear when exactly Smart Compose will hit iOS devices. Google said in a blog post only that Smart Compose will land on iOS “soon.”
