AMD’s latest Ryzen 7 9800X3D has enjoyed quite a warm reception from the media with our review calling the CPU’s pure performance “a big slap in the face for the new Intel processors”. The overwhelmingly positive response from the media has been mirrored by buyers who are apparently snagging up the Ryzen 7 9800X3D in troves.
To give just one example of how popular the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is, the CPU was in stock on Amazon when we initially started writing this report but went out of stock within half an hour. At the time of writing, you can again buy the Ryzen 7 9800X3D on Amazon but the CPU is expected to sell out quickly.
Seeing the Ryzen 7 9800X3D selling this well can compel some people to label it as a “paper launch” with little actual stock. However, Moore’s Law Is Dead claims in their latest video that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D didn’t have a paper launch and there was abundant supply.
Ryzen 7 9800X3D is reportedly “flying off the shelves”
First up, an MLID source who allegedly works for a “Major US Retailer” suggested that the retailer “can’t keep up” with the demand for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D. The demand has been so high that even after receiving a “TON of supply at launch” and regular restocks, the retailer couldn’t fulfill all orders.
MLID’s other retail sources shared the same sentiment with one claiming that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is “flying off the shelves” while the other reported that their large supply “wasn’t remotely enough”.
Planned tariffs and companies panic buying the Ryzen 7 9800X3D
One of MLID’s “Major Distributor” sources has warned that “a lot of US companies are panic buying more supply of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D (and other PC components than they actually need” to shield their pricing from future tariffs.
For the uninitiated, US President-elect Donald Trump has signaled possible tariffs of 20% on all imports into the country with Chinese imports set to endure a much-worse up to 60%. If these planned tariffs are enforced, the price of PC components like CPU, GPUs, and so on will undoubtedly increase. The source further reported that the tariff threat is the main reason why we are seeing more supply to the US market.
While MLID’s claims of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D selling quickly seem to be accurate, we can’t be sure of the CPU’s supply and its relation to any proposed import tariffs. So, take the information with a grain of salt.
