Here’s why some Americans on Social Security will receive an extra check next month

Some Social Security beneficiaries will receive an extra check next month based on what day the beginning of the month falls on in the coming months.

Beneficiaries who qualify for Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, receive payments based on what day of the month their birthday is, and what day of the week their payments are typically issued.

In November, the first of the month falls on a Friday and that is when recipients will receive their first payment.

However, in December, the first of the month falls on a Sunday. That means December’s payment will be issued early and arrive on Friday, Nov. 29 — meaning two checks will arrive in one month.

After that, the next SSI payment will not arrive until Tuesday, Dec. 31. That will cover January 2025’s SSI payment.
Payment will arrive in December because New Year’s Day is a holiday.
These benefits are paid to individuals aged 65 years or older who have low or no income, and younger people with a physical or mental disability.

Approximately 7.5 million Americans receive monthly SSI benefits.

The monthly maximum payment for SSI benefits is $943 for an individual or $1,450 for an eligible couple.
